Review of Dear Sir ~ CMJ 11/20/06
PAS/CAL Dear Sir (Le Grand Magistery)
This Detroit-by-way-of-Brooklyn-and-back-again band (don’t ask) eschew the usual reliance on laid-back, lo-fi happy accidents of most ’60s-leaning indie pop, instead aiming for a post-Revolver studio gleam. Acoustic coloring holds hands with singer Casimer Pascal’s fey—but not what fey has devolved into with current mopey Malkmuses—voice. Glam ghosts of Bowie’s quieter glitter moments swish through “C.A.U. (Sans Muscle)” and “Little Red Radio.” Supplying some synth stroking and odd endings only imply a passing interest in decades past 1972. Otherwise it’s bird chirps and enjoying the “springtime of our lives.” (ED)
